Tara Smith Promoted to Executive Vice President; Kerry Lynch to Director of Public Affairs
Michael Torrey Associates (MTA) has promoted Tara Smith to Executive Vice President and Kerry Lynch to Director of Public Affairs in March 2019. The Washington, D.C. based firm offers effective government relations, strategic communications, issue advocacy and full-service association management to a growing number of clients in the food, agriculture, and forestry sectors.
“Tara’s expertise is well known inside and outside of Washington,” said Michael Torrey, Principal of MTA. “Her understanding of the food and ag supply chain, combined with deep policy experience and can-do attitude make her highly qualified for this new role. As Executive Vice President, Tara will oversee and manage the Michael Torrey Associates client services, coalition building and association management. With nearly two decades of experience working in the food and agriculture industry, Tara’s expertise is well known. Tara joined MTA in 2013 as Vice President where she focused on developing strategy for legislative and regulatory issues, building coalitions and informing policymakers on client priorities. Prior to joining MTA, Tara served as a Senior Professional Staff for the Senate Agriculture Committee under Senator Pat Roberts (R-KS) where she covered commodity programs, crop insurance, and disaster assistance. Smith was also previously Director of Government Affairs for the American Farm Bureau Federation where she handled the farm bill and commodity issues. In the past Tara has worked for Monsanto Company and Promar International. Tara grew up on a corn and soybean farm in central Illinois. She has a bachelor’s degree in Political Science from Davidson College in North Carolina and an MBA from the University of Michigan. She and her husband currently reside in Washington, D.C.
As Director of Public Affairs, Kerry will assume an enhanced role with the firm’s communication services and continue to provide direction for new client services. Kerry joined MTA in 2014 as a Manager where she led the firm’s marketing strategy and outreach to clients. Additionally, Kerry provided support for client needs, communication services, and association management. Prior to joining MTA, Kerry worked with the Society of Wine Educators, the Animal Agriculture Alliance and the National Turkey Federation. She grew up in Virginia and earned a bachelor’s degree in communications from North Carolina State University and an MBA from Shenandoah University in Virginia.
Like others on the MTA team, Tara and Kerry’s roots are in rural America, bolstering the unique perspective and real-world understanding of agriculture that the firm provides.
