Shortly after being sworn into office on January 20, President Donald Trump signed off on a series of Executive Orders, memos and proclamations. This included the “America First Trade Policy” memo addressed to several incoming senior administration officials focused on “establishing a robust and reinvigorated trade policy that promotes investment and productivity, enhances our Nation’s industrial and technological advantages, defends our economic and national security, and – above all – benefits American workers, manufacturers, farmers, ranchers, entrepreneurs, and businesses.”
While the memo did not direct any immediate tariff hikes, later in the evening Trump told reporters new tariffs on Canada and Mexico could be imposed as soon as February 1.
