What We’re Watching

Earlier this month, the Congressional Budget Office (CBO) released baseline projections that included an additional $17 billion in spending for farm conservation programs over 10 years as compared to the 10-year spending projection made in May 2022, and SNAP budget authority increases totaling $224 billion compared to the May 2022 projections due to USDA’s update of the Thrifty Food Plan. Reports have indicated that an updated projection could potentially be released that would account for higher estimates for commodity prices.

As Congress returns to Washington, both the House and Senate Ag Committees are set to hold hearings. In the House, Tuesday’s hearing is focused on supply chain and regulatory challenges. In the Senate, conservation and forestry is the topic of the farm bill hearing.
